Help Davey! Unidentified Bird of the Week #1

Posted on December 22, 2013 at 4:50 PM

This female Dark-eyed Junco appeared under my feeder recently, and though the expected subspecies for my area is J. h. hyemalis, the "Slate-colored" Dark-eyed Junco, this bird seemed very colored and buffy, suggesting either a female "Pink-sided" or an "Oregon" Dark-eyed Junco. On my Flickr page, a few Flickrite bird experts commented, leaning generally to an extra buffy 1st year "Slate-colored". Maybe I'll have to save finding the rarer western subspecies for later!

I've had a similar bird at my feeder. I'd say Slate-colored.
